Prosecutors announced on Tuesday that two individuals have been charged with murder in relation to the tragic shooting incident at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade.
Dominic Miller, aged 18, and Lyndell Mays, aged 22, are facing charges including second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. They are currently in custody with a bond set at $1 million. The shooting resulted in one fatality and 22 others being hospitalized, causing widespread concern and shock in the community.
A verbal dispute led to gunfire, disregarding the safety of the thousands gathered in the area. Miller and Mays, who had no prior acquaintance, encountered each other at the parade on Valentine’s Day. The altercation escalated quickly, with Mays allegedly initiating the use of his weapon, followed by others, including Miller.
Tragically, a bullet fired from Miller’s weapon fatally struck 43-year-old Lisa Lopez Gavlan, a mother of two. These charges follow recent arrests of two teens on gun and resisting arrest charges, with the possibility of them being tried as adults in the future
Four individuals have now faced charges in connection with the tragic shooting. Authorities refrained from specifying the number of suspected shooters involved. The incident unfolded last Wednesday amidst the bustling streets of Kansas City, where throngs of fans had gathered to witness the NFL team’s celebratory parade.
According to police, the gunfire erupted following a dispute between the suspects, although the precise details of the altercation remain unclear. As shots rang out, causing chaos akin to a “stampede,” brave onlookers apprehended the suspects as they attempted to flee. Citizens managed to subdue the alleged gunmen until law enforcement arrived to take them into custody. Alongside the fatal injuries suffered by Gavlan, 12 children sustained wounds amidst the hail of bullets.
One young boy narrowly escaped a life-threatening injury when a bullet narrowly missed his lungs by mere centimeters, prompting his family to hail his survival as nothing short of miraculous. Fortunately, he and the other injured children were discharged from the hospital in stable condition by Saturday.
Among the victims, spanning ages from 8 to 47 years old, one individual remained in critical condition, while two others showed signs of improvement over the weekend.
Both Miller and Mays have been hospitalized since their apprehension, although the extent of their injuries remains undisclosed.
Their connection to the two minors facing charges remains ambiguous. Authorities have identified all bystanders struck by gunfire during the shooting but are urging anyone else who sustained injuries during the ensuing chaos to come forward and aid their ongoing investigation.
